I've always been a bit intrigued by granny squares. They seem impossibly complicated to a beginning crocheter, but armed with some rudimentary skills and a detailed tutorial in Crochet Today magazine, I had a go. To my surprise, they are easy and addictive.
My first attempts:
Building up to the start of a star afghan.

Those are FAB!!! What happens with the star? Is it lots of stars joined, or one that gets bigger and bigger? I like making hexagons in plain or similar jewel colours, and have now cracked the way of adding them together using crochet, making my own patchwork quilt! Crab stitch (sort of backwards double crochet stitches, it's in most books) makes a fantastic edging, and can easily be used to join the shapes as well. Octagons are good with little squares in between...I am SO glad you are enjoying crochet....most people seem to either do crochet or knitting, but there is not reason not to do both...Tunisian crochet next? It's a sort of mix-up of both...and no, I can't do it....YET!!! Fran
